WHAT IS THE GOAL OF HAVING A CODE OF CONDUCT? WHY DO WE DO THIS?

The main goal of having a Code of Conduct is to make SHA2017 a welcoming, inclusive event where everyone can feel comfortable, included and can fully engage in the event. WHAT DOES THIS MEAN? An inclusive event is an event where everyone feels respected and welcome, no matter what their differences might be. This specifically also means creating a safe space for marginalized people, because these people are more likely to suffer abuse and harassment.

WHAT ARE THE UNDERLYING VALUES OF OUR CODE OF CONDUCT?

The underlying values are: • Equality • Fairness • Friendliness • Communication • Inclusion • Diversity • Learning • Not-judging • Empowerment We strive to act according to these values, that, in our view, can be summarised in ‘Be excellent to each other’.

WHAT IS THE GOAL OF TEAM COHESION?

MISSION

Our mission is simple: ‘Be excellent to each other!’ and facilitate excellent behavior during SHA2017.

GOAL 1: BE THERE TO LISTEN, TALK AND MEDIATE

Having a Code of Conduct is nice, but it is also important to actively make sure that if the Code of Conduct is breached, there are people there to listen and take action if needed. One of the goals of Team Cohesion is to be there for people when they do not feel safe, when they feel excluded, when they feel harassed or discriminated, or when they just want to talk. We are also there if the Code of Conduct is breached, to mediate, or to get the right teams involved to take action. For example the Security Team.

GOAL 2: EMPOWERMENT

Another important goal is to be visible in a very positive way during and before the event. It should informally empower the event community to stick up for each other and ‘be excellent’ to each other. This way, even the people least likely to make their discomfort known, can be protected. When something happens, we will be there to create understanding and recognition of how and why some behaviour transgressed someone else’s boundaries, even if it happened entirely by accident. This is part of empowering the community.

RESPONSIBILITY

Our responsibility is dual: we have a responsibility towards victim(s) of discrimination of harassment, and towards the community as a whole. We will try to help people as much as we can, but we are not professional counselors. Our responsibility is to be there for individuals and the community if something happens, always keeping both in mind.

WHEN CAN SOMEONE CALL ON THE COHESION TEAM?

WHENEVER… • you feel harassed or discriminated • your personal boundaries were violated • you witness (acute or systemic) discrimination by other participants • you don’t feel well and need someone to talk to

WHAT KIND OF THINGS • Sexist remarks or jokes • Homophobic remarks or jokes • Racist remarks or jokes • Shaming someone because of appearance • Physical harassment • Non-consensual physical contact • Not respecting someone’s personal space • Physical and/or sexual assault • Online harassment (both social media and email) • Stalking • Not taking ‘no’ for an answer

WHAT CAN THE COHESION TEAM PROVIDE?

As stated before, we will be there to listen, talk, provide a safe space and mediate if needed. We are also there to get you to the right people if you need security or first aid or other support (e.g. get a friend for you, or call law enforcement). This means we can, for example: • figure out together with you how best to help you • come to you and mediate in case of a conflict at the event • provide you with a quiet space to retreat to, where you can process your experience • contact your friends and acquaintances • try to resolve a situation (as far as possible), for example by trying to explain to those who transgressed why their actions were transgressive

WHAT TEAM COHESION IS NOT

We are not professional counselors and we are not enforcers. We will not be making rounds on the terrain to monitor behaviour. We are not there to decide if someone is harassed or not, we are just there to listen if needed.

HOW TEAM COHESION IS STRUCTURED

Team Cohesion is a small team of volunteers, and we share all responsibilities. All of us are there to talk to if you need someone. The team has a team lead (Janneke/User:Rizoom) that can be called upon by the team if needed. The team also has backing from two on site general practitioners (huisartsen) that can use their professional experiences as a person of trust to back us up if something serious happens.

WHERE TO PHYSICALLY FIND US DURING THE EVENT

We have a spot in the Silent Lounge, which is near the water. There will be someone there to talk to between 8:00 in the morning and 1:00 at night. You can also always call us on +31644877471, someone will always man the phone.

HOW TO CONTACT US

• Come find us in the Silent Lounge near the harbour • Find a member of event staff and let them know. All our volunteer staff will be briefed on how to contact Team Conduct. • Drop us an email at conduct@sha2017.org. If you prefer to specifically speak to a certain gender, please specify this when you contact us. • Call the on duty Team:Conduct person on +31644877471 (24 hours)
